Home of the Brave

Hello everyone! I’m glad to be back on track after taking last week to be the director of Camp on Aqua out at Catfish Bay in Sioux Falls. Be on the look out for a blog post about the Sioux Falls water ski team in the next few weeks!

Now it’s time to switch gears to the next fun adventure of summer 2016. I love having a holiday to celebrate in the heat of summer, my favorite season! Enjoying our freedom we were so selflessly given, spending time with family and friends and eating pounds and pounds of macaroni salad at the lake is what life is really all about.

As you get ready for the 4th of July this week, keep in mind these fun DIY projects and be the Pinterest queen (or king) you’ve always dreamed of being.

[ 4th of July themed “home” frame]

This project takes minutes to complete and would add the perfect amount of spirit without being too cheesy or tacky. Click here to download the print out.

[Firework themed home decor]

What you’ll need:

Red, White and Blue acrylic paint
3 paint brushes
3 wood blocks of varying height
1 wooden star
3 two-inch pieces of wire
2 ft. of twine

This project may take a little more time, but the effort shows to have great reward. These fireworks are beyond adorable and look store bought. Like I mentioned before, 4th of July decorations are often tacky, but this decoration will keep your house looking classy while having a bit of spirit.

[American flag themed cupcakes]

This picture was taken at my family’s lake cabin a couple summers ago. The delicious cupcake recipe from my mom, the blue and white starred cupcake holders, and the strategically placed fruit made for a winning combo. This was super easy to do, and if you show up to your family gathering with a 4th of July themed food, you will for sure be the talk of the party. Happy eating this weekend everyone!

Holidays are such a fun time to decorate your home! Hobby Lobby is one of my favorite stores, so if you ever need a crafting buddy, give me a call!

And as always, if you know of anyone thinking about buying or selling their home, be sure to send them my way.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe fourth celebrating the land of the free, and the home of the brave!

Sweet Home Sioux Falls

While I have numerous favorite places in Sioux Falls, places to eat, places to shop, these are the top four places that give me those warm fuzzies that remind me why I love living in Sioux Falls.  I feel like this community has really stepped up in the last handful of years and it’s showing by our crazy growth. A construction worker once told me Sioux Falls expands by one block in every direction every year. I believe it!

I am excited to see where Sioux Falls will be in the next 5, 10 even 20 years, and to see my list of favorites grow.

Lincoln High School: This is where my journey began as a Sioux Falls resident. While my family has always been from the Sioux Falls area, my mom and I spent 9 years in Hershey, Pennsylvania, where I completed Kindergarten through 8th grade. After a summer of visiting my grandma, we decided to make the move back to be with family and I started school as a Lincoln High School freshman. This is also where I met my husband.  For a full recap of how we met, you can visit our wedding website  to read about the beginning of our relationship as high school sweethearts. I have so many great moments and relationships that occurred in this building so I love driving by either on Cliff Avenue or the interstate to rekindle those memories.

The Bike Trails: Most everyone knows that I love being outside. (During nice weather of course) Working out doesn’t seem like work when you can go for a walk or jog and take in the sights and sounds of nature. My favorite times on the bike trails have been when I saw a baby deer, when I can be close to the water, and of course when I can say hello to all the doggies in the dog park. I love that Sioux Falls made the bike trails a priority and that it is now connected around the whole city!

Downtown: I think we’ve all read enough news articles and experienced first hand the greatness of downtown within the last few years. I have few to no memories of downtown when I was in high school, and now find myself down there all the time. Whether it is grabbing a bite to eat, doing some shopping at the many boutiques, or visiting my husband at J.H. and Sons, there are countless options for a free Saturday afternoon. I also love looking at the Carpenter building while downtown because when it was a hotel during the fall of 1944, my grandma and grandpa stayed  there for their honeymoon.  Such history!  I am so glad these old building are being used to their full potential.

Aspen Heights aka home: I have owned my own home for over three years in the Northwest corner of Sioux Falls. It is a cookie cutter home but was the move in ready style I desired as a new homeowner. I love being close to the interstate and a short drive to downtown or the mall area. It has a quaint tree lined boulevard at its entrance that fills me with pride and happiness as I drive down the long street to Jaime and I’s humble abode. You truly hit “adult status” when you own a home and I have loved every minute of it!

A Home Isn’t a Home Without a Pet

Owner of Woofs & Waves, Justin Shatto and I are both proud graduates of Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls. It’s unbelievable to think it has been close to ten years since we shared those halls together and thought we knew what living in the ‘real world’ would really be like.  Nothing makes me feel older than scrolling through LinkedIn to see old high school classmates and the variety of impressive titles that they hold.

Justin is no exception. He has kept his full time job at the Diamond Room while opening Woofs & Waves with friend Mark Olesen, and continues to juggle both by being in the store a couple days a week and doing the business planning and paperwork on nights and weekends. Now that is passion and dedication for ya. Read below about Justin’s new business venture and what you can expect to find at Woofs & Waves, located on the east side of Sioux Falls.

What made you realize pet care was a passion and potential career instead of just a hobby?

I’ve known since I was 14 that I wanted to own a pet store. My first job was at an independent pet store and it was there that I found my passion for animals and helping people find the best food and products for their pets. I really looked up to the owners of the store and saw their passion for the business and their customers and that was infectious. My passion for fish and aquariums comes from my business partner, Mark. I have learned everything I know from him over the past 13 years and still have a ways to go before I know a fraction of what he does.

How did you decide on what products to focus on?

I can proudly say that we have the best team in Sioux Falls with a combined 50+ years of experience. Our two full time gals, Ginger and Christine, are responsible for filling our shelves and knowing what products sell and are always looking at new products. Without them this would not have been possible. They were in charge of ordering at their previous employer and it was a perfect fit to have them continue their responsibilities at Woofs & Waves. We are truly blessed that they have been with us from the beginning.

In your opinion, what are the best brands of dog food?
We carry a wide variety of great dog, and cat, foods for your furry friends. There is not one brand of dog food that is perfect for all dogs, because every animal is different has different nutrition requirements. To answer your question, I would go with either Nutri Source, Fromm, Tuscan Naturals or Orijen/Acana.

What pets do you have at home?
I have a four-legged daughter, Ava. She is a 2 year old German Shorthair Pointer. She loves going out and running freely in the fields or finding pheasants. While she loves swimming in the water, she hates duck hunting because she doesn’t have the patience to sit there and wait, nor does she have the ability. She always has to be running. I also have a 90 gallon freshwater aquarium with African Cichlids in it.

The First Sale

The month of May is officially over and what a whirlwind it was. At the beginning of the month, I started to feel the frustrations of being a new agent creep in while I was trying to patiently wait for my first qualified and motivated lead to present itself. I understood it took time to get the real estate ball moving, but I felt like the grace period of getting your license and fulfilling your first contract was soon to expire.

The first week of May was also the busiest weekend of the year at Lewis Drug, Mother’s Day.  I was there bright and early, or should I say dark and early at 5 a.m., and stayed late which meant racking up more than 30 hours that long weekend at my ‘part-time’ job. It was a fun and exhausting weekend to say the least.

Back to wearing my real estate agent hat,  but also relating to Lewis Drug, I got a call from my friend Amber wanting to look at a home right outside of Sioux Falls. We were coworkers years ago when I worked at the Lewis Drug office and have stayed friends ever since. We looked at a few homes, some too old, some too big, until we found the one that was just right. (insert goldilocks reference) It had an oversized garage for him, her husband Mike, and a charming home and yard for her. While on my way home from the showing, they called and said they were ready to make an offer. “GREAT!” While I was suddenly filled with an elated panic. Everything I’ve learned from countless training classes seemed to have left me, so I called my teammate Amy and she calmed my nerves and answered a few last minute questions. We presented the sellers with a solid offer since it was contingent on their current home selling, and got an accepted offer right away! What a great feeling. I couldn’t wait to give Amber and Mike the good news.

The next step was getting their current home on the market ASAP. In a matter of two days we managed to fill out the paper work, take measurements, snap photos, fill out the RASE MLS profile, and complete countless other small tasks to get it LIVE. Marketing included word of mouth, Facebook posts on both my personal and business pages, posts on online garage sales, Craislist, the multiple listing service, and the underground Facebook group of Keller Williams.

Just under two weeks later we were presented an offer and a few days later accepted after a few changes. Finding my friends a new home was so much fun and rewarding, but taking a listing and selling my first home was a moment filled with even more pride. I don’t see myself specializing in working with buyers or sellers, but will welcome the mix of the two in the future.

Closing is set for both homes on July 1st with more work and coordination to be done before that date! I am extremely grateful these first transactions have gone so smoothly and look forward to many more to come! If you are looking for someone to make the home buying or selling process an easy transition, give me a call! I am ready and eager to help and excited to continue on a career path I am passionate about. It all comes down to helping others, and that is what I am wired to do.
